What is a hydrogen vehicle?
A hydrogen vehicle is a vehicle that uses hydrogen as a fuel for power instead of other fuels such as gasoline, diesel, or CNG. The chemical energy of hydrogen is converted into electrical energy to generate power for an electric motor. However, this conversion can occur in two ways. This involves either the combustion of hydrogen in an ICE, or the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen in a fuel cell.
A fuel cell consists of two plates separated by an electrolyte membrane. One plate, called the anode, carries hydrogen; the other, called the cathode, carries oxygen. As hydrogen passes through the anode, it is split into electrons and protons by a catalyst. Positive hydrogen particles pass through the membrane, but negative hydrogen particles cannot. However, because atoms need to have an even charge, electrons are forced to change course through the circuit.
